There are several types of non-monogamous relationships openly and privately practiced in Montreal.
Non-monogamy – the basic definition means a relationship style that allows for sexuality and/or emotional intimacy with two or more people of either gender.
Polyamory – the basic definition means ‘many loves.’ For some Montrealers this means an open marital relationship where each partner dates or has relationships with others. At the other end of the spectrum, it means having a large group of friends with benefits. There are many variants, but the common thread is openness to and preference for, an emotional connection. Sex is part of the relationship, but not a defining characteristic. Hook ups at an all inclusive resort are not at the top of the priority list.
Swinging – the basic definition means no strings attached sex between partnered individuals, whether married or not. Swinging tends to be couple based and some couples do develop close friendships, and have deeper emotional connections, with other couples similar to polyamory. However, this is rare. Sex is at the top of the priority list and a week at an all inclusive resort are at the top of the list.
